GPU temperature?

I have 7600 gt and at idle it is at 70 degrees! IS that good and what are the limits?

Who is the manf? And is it PCI-E or AGP?

I have the Leadtek AGP model in a Dim4400. It doesn't run that hot, but removing the adjacent slot cover and leaving that slot open dropped the temp considerably for me. I tried a PCI slot cooler next to the card but all that did was fight against the fan on the card and actually raised the operating temp. I didn't try moving the fan to a lower slot away from the card.

I talked with Leadtek and they said anything under 90C was okay.  Currently, with a room temp of 78F and the PC under my desk, the card idles around 50C and reaches 69C under max use. Last winter with a room temp of 72F, the idle temp was about 46C and max around 65C. The Leadtek card will start to throttle itself back at 115C. I don't know what temp will make it shutdown.

Yes it can be "another" entry source for dust and dirt. You should periodically dust out the inside anyway. There are other input vents on the computer where dust and dirt can enter. Ideally, they are set so the airflow cools the components and exits through the PSU fan. If you build a computer, it may come with any combinations of input and exhaust fans. Dell seems to only use the PSU and its' fan for exhaust (the CPU heatsink is usually covered with a shroud and has it's own cooling fan). This is why you'll hear people talk about the terrible cooling provided in a Dell system. And of course, the bigger the case, the more room for airflow and heat dissapation. You don't say what system you have.

So... if the fan on the video card is working... and you should make sure if it is ... try and leave the adjacent slot cover and slot open and see what effect you get.

So i should open the slot underneath the pci-e slot? Like the cover right? Will it really help, since dell's manual says it can cause dust and dirt to enter comp.?

Those are the same temps my 7800GS runs at.

If the idle temp is 70 deg C, then its too high, despite what Nvidia or anyone else says. A good idle temp would be around 45-50 C, and that would also depend on ambient temperature. Maybe your heatsink fan is not spinning properly, or maybe airflow through the case is obstructed.

My 7800GT (with an Accelero X1 HSF) idles at 48C at ambient temps of about 26-28 C, and does not exceed 61 C under full load. A 7600 GT should idle much lower than 70 C even with the stock cooling setup.

Sorry to imply that 70C idle is okay. As Narind says, it is far too hot for what it should be in idle. When I said anything under 90C was okay, that was aimed more at under full load, and even that is hot.

I saw another post of yours looking for a GPU cooler. The Zalman that was listed is probably a good choice. I can only assume your present fan is not working at all or not very well. I think the temps I gave you for my 7600GT are more what you should be seeing, and I think those are even higher than average by a few degrees but are acceptable.

You never said what brand you have and whether you contacted their tech support as to why the high idle temp???? So I'm assuming it's a bad fan otherwise I don't see how it could run that hot unless your case cooling is really bad (clogged vents). Even with the Zalman, you may need to keep the adjacent slot cover open for additional air flow. You'll notice Zalman still recommends a case exhaust fan with their product.

Let us know what you did, if anything to drop the temp. It will help others.

I am going to open the slot underneath the g-card. Ill see if it works.

By opening the slot cover beneath card, has only reduced temp. by 3-5 degrees. Any other ideas? Also, by dusting my comp., will the temp. get lower?

When I was playing a warrock at high settings, i got around 75 to 80 degrees. Im guessing thats better than some others at the evga forums. I will be contacting evga. Edit: Also, after playing a game, the temp. remains at 68- 70 degrees.

That's about all I expected it to drop. You still haven't said who the card was made by.  I don't think your GPU fan is working correctly. What temp are you getting at full load? You need to get that info and talk with (or email) the card manufacturers tech support. I think a new card or fan is not out of the question unless they can tell you the temps you're getting (at idle AND at full load) is okay and normal (it isn't). And get that in writing for future reference if the card fails. To see what the temp is under load, open the NVidia control panel, enable "monitor temperature levels", minimize it and play a graphics intensive game for about 10 minutes. When you go back to the NVidia panel, you'll see a graph of the temps you were running.
