Help !!! - Major Boot Up Problem - Bootex and Pagefile Errors

Folks,

I have a major boot up problem. No real history - the Dimension 4300 booted up fine this morning for me, and then has gone into a bad state when my wife turned it on this afternoon.

If I boot up 'normally', it goes through the 'Bios' screen, flashes an XP screen, and then drops to what I think is the XP variant of Scan disc.

The messages it returns are:

\Bootex.log first allocation unit is not valid. The existing entry will be truncated
The \pagefile.sys entry contains a non valid link
The size of \pagefile.sys entry is not valid

and then after moving from a low % to a very high % complete I get

\windows\dump65ed.tmp is cross linked on allocation unit 1514752

and the thing just hags there, and requires a hard reboot.

I have tried rebooting using F8 and then

a) Using last known good configuration - but that just gives me the same outcome - scandisk as above

b) using safe mode which gives me a screen full of very similar messages like

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\pci.sys

but with different .sys files at the end

and then stops (hangs?) on

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\agp440.sys

Any help very much appreciated

David

mmm

I found this thread  http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread27706-1.html   and it sort of implies the same doomesday scenario

However,

When I went back to the PC after entering the problem on the forum, the PC had come up into windows in the safe mode - ie. having left it in the apparently hung state with the

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\agp440.sys

messages all over the screen, it eventually got into safe mode.

Now what to do ???

I'm currently backing up all my data to CD  :-) - so the disk itself is obviously working fine

Then its a question of
a) trying some repair utilities
b) just trying a shut down and reboot to see if the problem clears

Anybody got any advice ?

David

Sounds like HD or theres missing files for Windows XP. My suggestion is try formatting the HD and see if that works if it doesn't then its comes to the HD.

Folks,

Just thought I'd share the resolution.

Having backed up the data, I attemped just a simple proper shutdown of windows from Safe mode and a reboot.

The good news was that the page file error had gone, but I still got two other file errors that Scandisc attepted to fix. The bad news was that after the attempts the process completed, it insisted on another reboot, another scan, different errors, more fixes, another reboot and the original errors returned.

So, I into safe mode again. Same long wait for it to get there (at least 10 minutes )

Once in safe mode, I did a system restore to 4pm yesterday.

Worked fine, ran a disk check from the utilities area, pased fine, closed down clean and hard rebooted, again, absolutely OK.

I hope this helps you :-)
