Help!!!!

A couple of days ago I tried to take advantage of a 30 day trial of Mcafee firewall.
After downdloading it and logging onto the net I got nothing but Iexplore error messages (program has to close) so...after talking to Mcaffee online help I was told to run scandisk then defrag then clear temp files and re download the software.
I did this and had the same things happen.
I deleted the firewall but now I get cannot find server or dns error msgs when logging on to the internet and "this page unavailable" etc. After refreshing 3-sometimes 4 times I can load a page but quite often some of the grahpics are missing. I have tried dumping IE6 and reloading that made no difference. also have scanned for viruses useing both Mcafee and norton but found nothing. I can't even get into Mcafee's tech support anymore to (won't open)

ANY IDEAS?????? HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

Stay the heck away from Mcafee.
I have heard and read here 'many' reports just like yours about people useing any Mcafee product.
If you get your system running again, just use the free version of Zone Alarm.

If you have system restore enabled I would suggest restoring to a point prior to when you installed the firewall. McAfee provides the most junky versions of software available. I would not have a firewall or virus protection if the only option was McAfee. If you want a good firewall, install ZoneAlarm or Sygate. Both of them are free and both of them are worth 1000 times more than anything McAfee makes.

I concur, stay away from McAfee, and stick with ZA for a firewall and Symantec for a virus program.

NBG = No Bloody Good.

Bloody is from the Anglo-saxon word " blodig "

Let me pile on McAfee. I had McAfee Anti-Virus OEM on my 1999 Dell. It failed to intercept two SubSeven trojans, in spite of having up-to-date definition files. Thank God for Trend Micro's Housecall, or I wouldn't have known what was wrong.

I got Norton Internet Security (Anti-virus plus firewall) in spring 2001. It works great, is easy to update and actually stops viruses!!!!

I also hear good things about Zone Alarm on this board, though a co-worker installed it and found it to be a pain in the butt. Cheap as he is, he got NIS 2002 and is much happier now.

I know I am not as experienced as your other responders here.. but I went to McAfee Online Security Center after having massive problems with Norton, not once but two times on two different computers and operating systems. I specifically asked that Norton not be preinstalled on this computer because I was unwilling to lose the battle with them a third time.
I've had no problems running McAfee and it has caught many viruses for me. There are a few places that can't get past the Firewall to give me what I want, but I can turn the Firewall on or off for those situations and would just as soon know which apps/downloads require the Firewall to be closed. I can watch these more closely for problems and I keep a log. Just another side.... :-)

Since 'pileing on' is allowed...McAfee is pure junk, particularly it seems with Dell systems! Over the years, there have been countless complaints, problems and frustrations with using McAfee products. So, please! everybody stay away from the NBG McAfee!! And, uh...Karen...like the ol' timers say: even a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while...glad you have had good experiences with McAfee but you are definitely both blessed and in the minority! About the firewall issue: while certainly ZoneAlarm, Norton et al are good firewall products, for those running Windows XP Pro, the built-in Firewall is actually very good. I have RoadRunner Cable Commerical Internet service, broadband if you will, and have enabled the ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) and have tested it in several online security programs. XP's ICF has passed with great marks on every single test, particularly at the Security Scan (Port Scan) at DSLReports.com which indicated that I had a prefect security setting, completely invisible on the Internet! And that's just running XP's ICF! So, those that have XP give it try, in conjunction with a good Antivirus Program (Norton 2002 is the BEST! Scanning incoming and outgoing email automatically!). Hope this Helps!

Hi, daniel15.

That's a good interpretation of NBG it's not quite right, but, has exactly the same the same meaning, which is the important thing.
