Then, how noisy is the XPS 700? I never liked the tunnel cooling system because of noise. That's why I returned 2 Dell's in the past. My homebuilt P4 system with Zalman fans is dead quiet.
Mine is whisper quiet as well! I can say however that when I boot, the fans spin up quite fast momentarily and I would hate to have it run at full speed for any length of time! I think I would get drawn in! lol
My first one was dead silent. The one I have now if pretty loud (compared to most quiet Dell's) Also my case vibrates and I have to put something on top of the case to stop it or it drives me nuts!
So, the XPS 700 still uses a huge heat sink plus a cooling tunnel. Why can't Dell offer a Zalman (or any other quiet) CPU fan for the 700? I guess I'm spoiled by my home-built *Silent* PCs (Antec Silencer cases plus Zalman fans).
Just to give an idea... I have a Buslink external sli back up drive and it is louder then my XPS 700. I can't hear my PC running over the back up drive at all.

I am only guessing here, but there would be no need for something as serious as a Zalman cooling solution, given the limited overclocking that Dell allows with XPS and the naturally cool temps of the Core2.
If you look under the shroud of the CPU heatsink you will see a very large heatpipe system.

Yes, but it is much more like a Mac G5 than a XPS 600. Wide open front and back.

I do not have any details but the XPS 700 uses a Passive thermal cooling solution.
