How to Boot Using USB Key

I want to be prepared in case I need to recover my OS using a USB recovery key.  How do I navigate the bios menu and find a USB boot option. I have a Dell XPS 27 One running Win 8.1. I know I can only recover to 8.0 with this key as I don't have the premium recovery software! I need a cheat sheet handy. Is there more than one recovery mode. I know I will need to tap the F12 key on boot up to get to the bios.

While you still can I would download a recovery ISO directly from Microsoft. Windows 8 Certified UEFI machines REQUIRE 64 BIT media for booting 7 or 8.

Error 0xc000000f indicates and attempt to Clone an encrypted drive.  You can’t do this with windows 8. You also cannot change the boot from secure boot to MBR. EFI systems require GPT partitions.

Generic Keys can be used to install but not activate.

These keys cannot be used for the method below.

Great information.  I plan on doing this soon. I still would like a road map through the bios to get to the boot from usb. I have seen this somewhere in a video.

Thanks

Setting CSM Legacy mode in bios and pressing F12 with the boot-able device installed BEFORE turning on power will give a boot menu to wit has USB DEVICE as an option.  WINDOWS 8 DOES NOT HAVE F8 BOOT RECOVERY.  Pressing F12 DOES NOT make a blank device bootable.  This must be created on a working machine with the same version of OS.  Meaning WIN7 or WIN8 32 bit or 64 bit.

If you are using XP then you have to use an ISO and the windows 7 dvd download tool to make the media.
