Hyper-Threading crash

I am running XP home edition on a Dell Dimension 4600, 3.06 gig with hyper-threading. I had to fit a new hard drive to the machine, but when I did the Bios did not recognise either the DVD drive or the new hard drive. I returned the bios to factory default not realising that this would turn hyper-threading off. I loaded windows and everything else before I realised this now when I enable hyper-threading I get a blue screen of death crash. This often occurs about five or ten minutes after the machine has loaded. If I turn hyper-threading off the machine seems to be fine, but  have noticed that sometimes the crash occurs if I try to disable my Linksys USB ethernet adapter connected to my ADSL router (by clicking the icon in the sys tray or in the device manager). I wonder if anyone has come across this, I have tried other forums and no one has heard of this problem.

You have raised an interesting point that has been bugging me. The OS and all the drivers were loaded before I discovered HT was off. The first time I enabled it windows loaded the processor drivers. So the answer to your question is they were loaded last of all. My question then becomes could this be the source of the problem and do you think a re-installation (making sure HT is turned on first of course) is in order.

If I understand correctly, this is a new primary HD. Did you jumper it to 'cable select'? Did you install all the correct hardware drivers, starting with the chipset driver, after you loaded Windows onto the new HD?

I don't think it makes any difference if HT is on or off when you load the drivers, as long as the drivers are loaded. The default on many Dell PCs is HT-off, and turning it on shouldn't make the PC crash. I've turned it on and off on my 8400 with no problems. So did you actually load the chipset driver? You might want to load it again, even if you did.

Open Device Manager and see if any devices are marked with ! or X. Those devices should be uninstalled and then reinstalled too.

Is the CPU correctly recognized in BIOS? You might also want to clear the BIOS NVRAM too.
