Hyperthreading Processor Question

i just bought a system and it is described as "Pentium 4 Processor at 2.8 Ghz w/ 800 Mhz front side bus/HT Technology".  Does this processor have HT technology or just the motherboard ?

obrien040362,

Maybe I am confused. The 800 fsb systems with 2.4 or higher support HT.

Hi,

I believe that all processors running on the 800Mhz FSB are Hyperthread enabled. Take a look at http://www.intel.com/homepage/land/hyperthreading.htm for detailed info.

Whoops, Jesse clarified that the 2.8Ghz does not support HT. Only the "C" variants of the P4 processors support HT which may not be the variant that Dell is shipping.

obrien040362,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Not the 2.8. The only system that we have that supports HT is the new XPS system.

the system I bought is the new 4600.  You are saying it doesn't have a HT processor even though Dell states it has HT technology.

The following chips are Hyper Threading capable:

3.06ghz P4 533mhz fsb

ALL P4 with 800mhz fsb

To see if your system has HT enabled, click start|Control panel|system|hardware|device manager, expand the view next to "Processors", is there two cpu's listed? If so you have HT enabled.

How do you find out what speed FSB you have?

FACT - My 8300 w/a 3.0Ghz supports HT.  I can enable/disable it in the BIOS, and when enabled, I see 2 CPU's listed in both the task manager and device mangaer.
