Doesn't matter what's latest from Intel. The 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700 is what Dell is currently offering in the XPS 8900 on their sales site.
The motherboard has an M.2 slot for an add-in Wi-Fi card. Your system has an 'n' add-in card. The Special Edition has an 'ac' add-in card. So if you really need 'ac', you could buy a different M.2 WiFi card.
Keep in mind that your router also has to support 'ac' so installing an 'ac' card in the PC won't do any good if the router doesn't support 'ac'.
Thanks very much for the explanation, Ron. I had made an assumption about the WiFi, so good to know that is not an indicator of an "older"motherboard. And if i7-6700 is the designation for the 6th generation processor, then I am in good shape. So just to clarify, if the processor in my computer is labeled i7-6700 then it is definitely 6th generation. Yes?

Yes, it an i76700 is a sixth generation processor. the 8700s had core i7 4770 and 4790s which are fourth gen.
The motherboard completely different for the sixth gen compared to the 4th gen.

The first digit in the CPU number designates its generation, so I7-6xxx is 6th generation, and I7-4xxx is 4th generation.

Thank you both for your answers. That is reassuring. Nothing stays "latest" very long, so good to know that for the moment that is where I am.
