I noticed this same question was also cross-posted in the Audio section, and the Dell moderator moved it to the Linux section.

Ok you are going to have to do a full repair.

Boot the computer with the XP Cd and setup will start, choose repair, not the recovery console, and run it, it will repair Windows XP and you will still have all of your Docs etc.

It doesn't give me a repair option exclusive of the recovery console. It gives me 3 things to choose from: 1. To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.
         2.  To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
         3.  To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

I went ahead and did that and then tried to reboot and now this time after it does the bios thing at the dell logo screen, i get an all black screen with the words "Error Loading Operating System" at the top left.

Ok, I did and now I'm not sure what to do at the next screen concerning partitions.

"

Windows XP Home Edition Setup

The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer.

Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select an item in the list.

    *  To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press ENTER.

    *  To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C.

    *  To delete the selected partition, press D.

76294 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

    -:  Partition 1 [FAT]                                                     39 MB  <32MB free>

    C:  Partition 2  Inactive  OS/2  Boot Man                    64252 MB <49882 MB free>

    E:  Partition 3  [Unknown]                                           102 MB  <101 MB free>

         Unpartitioned space                                               11900 MB

"

partition 3 and the unpartitioned space could probably be given back to partition 2 on C, they were created for the Fedora install that I did but since that messed everything up in the first place i'd rather just get rid of it from my system. Does that mean i should highlight both of those and delete them?  In either case, what's the next step I should be taking to get to the next screen i want to be at?

P.S.  I want to thank you for being so helpful, I know it can be frustrating to try and help someone who doesn't give you enough information so I'm trying to help you in return by giving you as much information I have on my screen as possible.

Yes go ahead an delete the partitions you don't need while you are there.

You want to choose the C partition and press enter, the next screen will give you the option to repair the Windows Install.

I deleted the partition. I then highlighted C and pressed ENTER and this message came up.....

"

Windows XP cannot recognize the partition you selected.

Setup cannot install Windows XP on this partition. However, you can go back to the previous screen, delete the partition, and then select the resulting unpartitioned space. Setup will then create a new partition on which you can install Windows XP.

Oh, well it looks like there is a problem and you are going to have to start from scratch again.

Delete it and start over. :smileysad:
