Inaccessible boot device

After battling with a compatibility problem with my ATA hard disk controller on my Dimension 8100 (Windows 2000) I disabled the hard disk controller in the device manager. After rebooting, I got the blue screen with Stop Error 0x0000007B - Inaccessible Boot Device. I am unable to get Windows to load, even in safe mode or using the "Last good configuration."

Basically I need to enable the hard disk controller, but I can't figure out how to do this without reloading Windows and losing my user information and documents. I don't mind reloading Windows - IF I can recover all my documents and Outlook folder first. Any ideas?

I am NOT able to boot, even in safe mode. Are you saying that I might be able to physically plug the IDE cable into a different location, and then successfully boot?

if u can boot to the safe mode then back up all the data from the safe mode. The remove the ATA controller card and directly connect the hdd to the IDE port and then try to restart the system. Do let me know what happens

yeah take out the ATA card. Connect the Datacable directly to the IDE slot. Have only your video card,RAM,HDD,CDrom and u r floppy drive remove all the other cards out., should work out. remove all the other PCI cards except for the Video card.

Winner! Winner! Winner!

I used my Win 2K floppy setup disks. Once I got to the setup screen, I chose "repair." It went through the long process of loading Windows, and I was scared that all my data would be wiped out. But when everything was finished, my user accounts and all programs and documents were intact.

There are still a few things acting strangely, but I am back in business.

Thanks!
