If you connect to the internet by broadband, the integrated ethernet controller should be disabled if you have a PCI ethernet controller installed in your system. Your DSL or cable company may have installed their own ethernet controller instead of using the ethernet controller built into your computer.
I connect to the Internet by Dial Up, so is it safe to assume they used their own ethernet controller instead of using the ethernet controller built into my computer or do I need to find out for sure? I do appreciate your reply.

Since you connect by dial-up, then there is most likely not a second ethernet card in your system. You can re-enable the ethernet adapter in your computer. The driver for the ethernet adapter is on the Dell Dimension Resource CD or Drivers and Utilities CD.
Since your system does not need to use the ethernet adapter, it is not really necessary to re-enable it.
