Keyboard/Mouse not responding

Hello, I've got a Dell Dimension E310 with XP. I no longer have the original keyboard and mouse, which did work, so I'm trying to use my own. The pc only has USB ports. I've tried different mice, different ports, but no matter what I do I can't get past the welcome screen since neither the keyboard or mouse will function. I didn't see any setting in the bios. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Be sure you plug them into the upper most usb ports on the back of the PC, post back.

If they are already plugged in there, try the lower 2 ports.

Are you using adapters to connect them to the PC?

Not to hijack this thread, but I am desperate. I have a 2400 dell dimension xp home,Same for me,can not move around in windows.I am plugged in right.using usb standard mouse and keyboard that was shipped with my E310.They are wired. The 2400 with the problem is my mothers. I am starting to think after the last update from microsoft is the problem. It seems like that was when it started, after she tried to get on the next day, might be a coincidence. I have tried safe mode, they work in set up and bios they worked when I ran 32 bit diagnostics but not after windows loads. To the person who started this thread,is it like that for you to? Did it happen after a update? What kind of keyboard and mouse were on your system? on my moms was a labtec wireless. I just wonder if the drivers are corrupted, and if so how can we get in to uninstall them? If I knew how to do command prompt,I would try safe mode with command prompt,I have been looking at all the commands in help and support on my E310.Please post back and let me know the answers to the ?'s I asked. To a moderator, any ideas?? Mark

If you think an update caused the problem, use system restore and pick a date before the problem started.

Shut down the PC, unplug the power cord and hold the power button in for 15 seconds.

Open the case and remove the cmos battery for 15 Minutes (note the polarity of the battery before removal) Reinsert the battery after 15 Minutes, close the case and plug it in. Then do the following if you have keyboard function in the bios.

Turn the PC on
* Watch the keyboard lights. When they flash, tap the F2 key
* The message, Entering Setup should appear
* Press the [Caps Lock], [Scroll Lock] and the [Num Lock] keys to light up all three lights on the keyboard
* Press the [Alt] and keys at the same time
* The computer issues a beep
* Press the [Alt] and keys at the same time
* The computer issues a beep
* Down arrow to Onboard or Integrated Devices [press Enter]
* Set everything to On except for USB Emulation which should be set for NO BOOT
* Press the [Alt] and keys at the same time
* The BIOS saves settings and the computer restarts
