LCD Cracked

My employer recently issued me a Dell D600 that was a little over two years old. Based on the condition of the case, the PC had seen heavy use. The day after I received the PC, I noticed a jagged line running diagonally across the screen. This was followed shortly after by multple jagged lines. Evenually, there were many lines as if the LCD display had shattered. The PC was sitting on my desk, undisturbed, the whole time this was occuring.

Has anyone heard of this type of LCD failure? Could previous abuse of the PC cause a delayed cracking of the LCD?

The initial "crack" could have been caused by misue or could have been caused in how the unit was handled moving it.  I've never heard of one "breaking" on it's own - something (someone) had to cause it.
