What does all this really mean?

Light Scribe is using the CD/DVD writer to print titles, etc. on special disks. The disk is put in the drive upside down to print the titles. Double layer are newer (expensive) disks with twice the capacity of normal DVDs.

Light Scribe uses the laser to make a label or art work on the top side of the dvd disk when using special Light Scribe disks, which typically cost more than regular disks.  It does nothing extra for the recorded side of the disk.  Double layer capable means the drive can burn special (and costly) double-layer disks, effectively increasing the dvd capacity from 4.7 gig to about 8.5 gig.  Single layer disks cost 30 to 50 cents each.  Double-layer disks cost $2 to 3 each, but are handy for large video projects.
