Logitech G7 and software
Hi to all,
This will be a dopey question for certain, but i do need anyone's help!
After installing the G7 mouse and 'Setpoint' software & drivers (v2.42) i later found updated software & drivers (v2.47) which i downloaded to hard drive where it sits in the form of an .exe file (33mb).
I honestly dont know how to proceed!
Do i run the file or uninstall something(s) first?
If someone could post what i should do, i would be much assisted.
Thnx for any input.

PS: My 8400 has been buggy lately and has named driver files for USB devices in the error msgs.

BTW: if Setpoint doesn't give you enough options to set all the buttons on the mouse, go to this link and see if there are "uberOptions" for the G7. Some guy independently developed files with lots! more options than Logitech offers in Setpoint and they work great on my MX1000.

Exactly what USB errors are you getting? You may need to uninstall all USB entries in Device Manager and then reboot. XP will reinstall the USB ports. If that doesn't fix the errors, you may want to run a system file check.

Hey thanks Ron for reply earlier this wk, apologies i read it not sooner.
Well i got Setpoint sorted after some other dramas. Used Add/Remove etc. Seems ok.
Shall definitely check out the link you have posted.
The USB errors on my 8400; Various shutdown msgs plus a BSoD and several instances of nothing at boot (except a buzzy, non-Dell-beep round back). Devices implicated (by file association) include UPS and game controller adapters. I have lots of USB stuff, and when the machine wont even boot, it always comes right after removing a plug or 2.
In your post you've mentioned uninstalling USB in devmgr. I find the USB list in devmgr VERY confusing, are you able to describe what you mean? Do i need to unplug any/all beforehand?
The list i have has:
So would i.. right click >uninstall? Safe to do, is it?
Does this remove any drivers/software?
Thanks again for reply and help provided,
Sic0

Just to be safe, manually set a System Restore point on your system, then disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse, if you have those. Expand list under USB in Device Manager. Right-click each item under USB and select Uninstall. When all USB entries are removed, exit Device Manager and reboot. XP will reinstall the USB drivers. This procedure does not remove drivers for individual USB peripherals like printers, modems, etc but usually fixes many USB problems.
As for the buzz around the back, could that be video card fan revving when system fails to boot and doesn't load video card driver which normally controls the card's fan? If it fails to boot and implicates UPS and game controllers, you may need to uninstall/reinstall those drivers.
Also, run BIOS setup (press F2 before XP starts to load) and make sure option that says "USB-NO BOOT" is enabled. That prevents BIOS from looking at USB devices before booting, especially when it expects to find something that you unplugged. And/or only unplug USB devices while the system is running so it detects the disconnect, rather than doing it while it's off because it may go looking for the missing device.

Hey Ron,
Those sound like sound ideas, i shall get onto them my next session. I wonder does this stuff relate in some way to 'USB registry keys' ?
And Ive looked over the thread at LogiGamers, in the frenzied search for;
-[G7 thumb-click DPI toggle/cycle]-
but i might have harboured a pipe dream there.. A good link though and one well worth mentioning.
Thnx for the detailed help RoHe, will post any results.

Hello to Ron
-if you are still about!-
Sorry not post results earlier, had quite a fortnight towards the end of which i was able to take your advice:
Since i could not determine which USB entry was which i dusted off the PS/2 k+m and added em one at a time (removed later), and then went thru the procedure you outlined (the setting for 'USB- NO BOOT' did the trick i think) and now its working well with all devices connected. I hope the re-installed game controller has no drama- yet to fully test the dodgy thing.
Before any of that i had a replacement board and psu arrive and be installed, flashed etc (none of which fixed the USB prollem by the way) and a day after using the fix you posted, i got locked in the computer by ZoneAlarm (i still cant really work it out) and i wondered what was next..
Well those would be the short versions(!)- but thnx again for assistance that certainly worked.

You seem to have had your share of PC troubles lately!
Don't quite understand what the ZoneAlarm issue is now. But try booting in safe mode (press F8 before XP starts to load). Manually set a System Restore poin and then uninstall ZoneAlarm. There apparantly were some problems reported with ZoneAlarm v6.1.744.001, if that's what you have. I've been using it without problems so it can be made to run. I turned off McAfee antiviral software before installing it and so far, so good.

Can I ask what you think, Ron? Is that cooling extrapolation going to impede installation- I took some photos but not measurements last time i was in there, typically the wrong angle.
Much reading to be done. Rest to be had.
Thx again to Ron for your time.

I hope you have an empty PCI slot because this board looks to be double-wide which means you won't be able to put anything in the PCI slot directly next to the PCI-e slot.
You must have $ to burn!

Hi Ron- Sorry for posting on this old thread!
Just wanted to follow up with the results of the endeavors: All went well except that purchase of RAM!
I got some now but i thought i better describe to someone about my experience with Cru*ial.
-Clicked on the RAM i wanted then the usual cart business showed up.
-A page appeared saying something like: ".. a problem has occurred with your order, please check 'cookies' ..or some rot.
-I go back and start again about 20 seconds later and BANG- the price had gone up!!!
Not a veteran net user, but this sounds underhanded to me. Anyway, the transaction fell thru for other reasons (luckily) so i bought OCZ Value Pro and it goes great.
That Expenditure Machine kept rolling too- got a Dvico HDTV tuner (USB ver) and a nice OCZ Rally flash 1gb also.
The video card is really good- even though it obstructed my last PCI slot.
Well thanx again Ron for the help you provided.
