Mass Storage device

Hello

This is my first time on a forum. Hope someone can help

I have several Dimension PC's and two others connected to a Dell Server. I also have a seperate dell PC as an internet server.

I have a problem with one of the Dimensions. If I connect my memory stick it does not appear in my computer. On all other PC's it appears as drive F but on this dimension nothing. I know it is connected because it appears in the device menu and also the 'remove device' icon appears on the tool bar but I am unable to access it. I think I remember once seeing it referenced as drive E when previously searching for the fault. The server is seen as drive E from all PC's so maybe that is the problem but if so how do I give the memory stick a drive name. When I search properties for the device it says it is working correctly

Can anyone help please

David

Windows grabs the first available drive letter that is open for removable/mass storage devices so don't worry about the drive letter.

What version of Windows are you using? What file system is the thumb drive formatted? Is this a secure thumb drive, a couple of those require drivers for pre-SP2 XP or pre-SP4 Windows 2000?

Yep, he's right, I read your first post fast this morning and didn't catch the word server. That is the issue, and disk managment will resolve it. Personally, I always set my optical drive as R: and my mapped server drive as X: on my home network, leaving me plently of headroom from drive letters down below.

Here is where the problem lies, when you have mapped drives on XP and plug in a removable storage device XP will assign it the next available drive letter right? Well XP for some reason does not keep track of mapped drives, therefore it will assign it the same drive letter, so you will have to go into disk management and find the thumbdrive and assign it a letter a little further down the list, Xp will remember this next time you insert the Thumbdrive.
