Master/slave question
I am running a Dimension L1000R with an HP CDRW hooked up to one of the IDE cables, and the hard drive hooked into another.
I want to hook up a second hard drive. Due to location (the 3.5" bay under the CDRW) it would make sense to hook up the new HD to the same cable as the CDRW, setting the CD to slave and HD to master, right?
Would doing so affect my first hard drive at all? (the first HD being connected to a totally separate cable)
thanks.

Hi,
Setting the new drive as master 'or' slave will have no effect on the first hard drive.
Setting the new drive as master makes sense as long as the CDRW will work with that setup. Some CDRW drives insist on being set as Master. You can check at the drive makers site, or just set it up as master and see if the burner has any problems.

The L1000r does not have an available bay for a second hard drive. the small bay you have is an external bay for a zip drive, or tape b/u. If you do hook somethig up follow the hookup below...keep both hard drives on the primary IDE
Primary - (Master) Hard Drive #1
(Slave) Hard Drive #2 or Zip Drive
Secondary (Master) CD-RW/DVD-RW
(Slave) CD-ROM or DVD
Dell uses the CS (Cable select configuration)
The position on the IDE Ribbon cable determines Master or Slave
The End of the Ribbon cable is the master and the center position is the slave.
If you chose to use seperate Master/Slave jumper settings the position of the unit on the cable doesn't matter.
Make sure you set the Jumper pins on the back of the unit your installing to match the configuration of your computer...
If you chose CS(Cableselect) both devices on the line have to be set to cable select..

A guide to IDE device config
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confRecommendations-c.html
A related thread on installing a second HDD in a Dimension L's 3.5" bay
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_harddrive&message.id=38740
My first choice would be second HDD(master) and CDROM(slave) in the drive bays connected to the secondary IDE MB controller. The IDE cable connecting the motherboard primary controller to the boot HDD has no free/open connectors(=single device cable). Connecting another IDE device located in the drive bays above the boot HDD requires a 24" to 36" two device ATA/IDE 100/133 cable which works fine but exceeds the 18" IDE standard thus making this config not the primary option. Moving the primary/boot HDD to the 3.5" bay is a workaround to connecting a second IDE drive bay device to this circuit. Hope your upgrades go smoothly

Hi,
Yes he could if he wanted to. But he said that the cable fit better on the second IDE cable.

Hi,
What you describe will work. But adding the new drive on the second IDE cable will also work and his cables will fit at the same time. The extra bay he wants to use is just fine for a hard drive if he can make it fit.
