Maximum RAM speed for Dimension E521 ?

I have a friend running XP on this w/1GB (2 x 512mb) PC2-5300 RAM. The CPU is AMD 2.0Ghz/3800+, 64 bit capable. They want to upgrade to Win. 7.

I know RAM is backwards compatible, but how far back?  I have 2- 1GB sticks of some really nice PC2- 8500...

Can I use it?

Cheers if someone can answer this one!    :)

Hi TracyLF,

Crucial specifies only DDR2 PC2-5300 for this system, so I suspect the faster speed will not work. However, the system has four RAM slots, so it's possible to add 2x1GB PC2-5300 (very inexpensive) for a total of 3GB, which will run Windows 7 fine.

Hi Osprey,

I was hoping that perhaps someone here had tried it on an actual E521. Crucial has been wrong many times in the past (for systems I've checked through their site).

Thanks for replying...appreciated.

Of course there's nothing preventing you from trying it.

I've had no trouble with PC6400 in "newer" DDR2 Dells like the E521. However, I don't have an E521 and my experience may not apply to that model.

I've read here that some boards accept 6400, yes...but I was hoping to get feedback from someone who might have actually used the 8500 successfully.

t was worth a shot.  Who knows? Maybe there's still someone here who has tried the 8500 RAM?

Cheers  :)

PS- Osprey- you & I started tinkering with PC's about the same time, I see. My 1st was a Dell Dimension P3 desktop, 13gb HDD, 450mhz. Later upgraded the CPU via a Powerleap adapter to get to a P4/Celeron. Never looked back & now do computer work for a living in AU.   :)

Have you tried them in the E521? Sometimes they are backwardly compatible.

The E521 is usable but obsolete, so I wouldn't advise buying 8500 sticks for it.

Not buying- already have them & trying not to have to buy any more if these will suit. I'm helping a pensioner.

Cheers!

The E521 is usable but obsolete, so I wouldn't advise buying 8500 sticks for it. If you want a dramatic boost in performance, buy a 120gb SSD instead and use it as the OS drive.

Had a chance tonight- only got beeps.

Issue is: 5 bulged caps on the board...I recommend a new system.

Cheers

Was the system running before you put the new RAM in?
