I also had many problems after upgrading
Mcafee virus scan to Mcafee 2000 package.
Locked up computer and crashed it every
time I turned it on. This company has terrible
customer support and has yet to send me a
refund after returning software 6 weeks ago.
I switched to Norton - runs great.
ejj,
The McAfee Clinic you signed up for is 2weeks free use of the Clinic. When that time is up you will be asked if you want to continue, just say no if you don't want this service. You will have the time period specified for free updates. You can access that through the McAfee Icon on your desk top or there may be an option listed when you click Start/Progams. I had McAfee already installed on my system when I got it in Aug. There is an icon that I click and it brings me to a McAffee page that tells me if my virus definitions( .dat files) need to be updated. (you need to be connnected to the internet at the time) There are instructions and I find it quite easy. They have updates about every 10 - 14 days. By double clicking the icon in the lower right corner (magnifying glass w/clock) you will find you can access information about your McAfee virus program by clicking the Help button at the top. Hope this helps. Barbara
Just some thoughts. You do not need to upgrade your search engine just yet. You do need to update your DAT files. When updating, the first option given is always to Upgrade. Ignore it. Then Update your DAT files. Some people like the Clinic because it updates the DATs automatically and also keeps the engine upgraded. It virus scans your files from the Web. I prefer to virus scan my own files manually. I do update the DATs every two weeks. I have McAffee 4.02 and plan to keep it as long as McAffee supports the DAT files. I'm told that the support runs for two or three years. Lifetime updates are for the life of the virus scan engine not the lifetime of the user. Most users have either McAffee or Norton. Which everone you start with is the one you make all the mistakes with learning to run it and downloading DATs. Then you switch and having made all the mistakes with the first one you like the second one. One other thing, always read carefully before clicking your mouse. Don't click if you don't understand the option. You may end up with options that you do not want or worse yet have to pay for. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. HTH
When I bought my Dell I had nothing put in it as a package I got the Norton System Works. (not) been there done that I use "Inoculat It 5.0" with real time protection and Macro works great I don't even know it's there. Even when Downloading it never gets in the way of a install. Works for me. But this is my opinion I could be wrong.
Merry Christmas
