Media Card Reader Loose

My media card reader is loose. The screws stick out of the reader so it doesn't fit snug. I'm afraid to tighten it more because I don't want to strip it. What should I do?

Thank you.

umm if its in a bay are you sure your using the right size screws??? if the screws wont tighten down then it usually means you have the wrong size or did you cross thread them and striped the threads on the unit.

oh :(

welllll um try removing the screws and putting them back in first. if still to tight, find some hard drive mounting screws (same as cd drives screws) and try them. if they dont work then the screw holes are most likely striped or just bad. if its that then i would warrenty the card and get it replaced if the loosness really bothers you

ive noticed you've posted on quite a few things. is this your first comp (just curious :P???

Unfortunately, this is just how the media card reader with the easy installation posts fits in the XPS 400. I thought something was terribly wrong when a spinning DVD caused such noise (the media card reader vibrating so badly). It has been awhile so I don't recall all the details, but with both this and the floppy drive, I removed one or two of the post screws and then attached them (adding washers) through a hole on the mounting bracket. This gives a solid installation of the drives and has been trouble free.

I just received my XPS 400, and I noticed the same thing with my unit.  The media card reader does not sit tight in the tray.  There is a little bit of movement, and I am not getting any vibration when running the DVD, CD player.

Actually, I used to build my own computers. I stopped when the P3's started coming out (my last computer was a P3/600). Mainly because my company gave me a laptop, I've been doing more programming/development, and doing more management. Getting away from the IT work and the industry. This is my first time buying a prebuilt computer. I went with Dell because I believed it was the "highest quality" and thus why these little things bother me.

Since other people seem to have a similar problem, I would probably call/E-mail Dell and let them figure it out. This is the reason why I even went with Dell. If it was some tech who forgot to tighten it, no biggie. I can do that. But if it's a "defect", I'll let them deal with it.

How can I recommend Dell as a vendor when their products come out like this? It would make ME look bad too!

If you can, try to find some of the standard screws that come with drives and use them to replace the screws used by Dell. The ones used by Dell have a long, unthreaded shoulder to allow easy removal/installation of the floppy drive and the media card reader. Unfortunately, as you've discovered, the floppy and media readers sit loose in the case.

Nice idea, poor execution by the designers.
