memory anomaly?

my new me machine was left cleanly rebooted, at the network password screen at 00.30.
at 06.00 when i entered my password, no memory was available to run the startup applications, the clock had lost 90 minutes, the mouse took an age to get to the start tab (because it was so erratic and jumpy) and it took a good three minutes to shut off and reboot.
it is a p4 with 256 mb ram, can't remember this happening in 98!
this was mailed to dell support, but i am not expecting an answer.
i sent a mail about an erratic mouse nearly 48 hours ago and no reply yet, is this nornal for dell?

Does this only occur if you start your computer, not log on to the network and leave it for a while? Does your computer startup and run normally if you go all the way into Windows? Is the hibernate or standby feature in power management turned on? What operating sytem are you running? If you are not running Windows 2000, why do you need to log on to the network?

Provided some more information and maybe someone here can help you.

running me,
memory runs right down over a 2-3 hour period when browsing, network card is needed for cable modem.
have turned all power management features off, increased temp internet files folder to 450mb.
the mouse gets more and more difficult to move as time progresses.
to see what memory was being used i put mem turbo on, at the point of bad mouse movement it reported 0 system ram was available.
i left it running after a reboot and me does not seem to return all memory used for opening pages etc. it just keeps diminishing until the system is not useable.
