That's not what your specs

say. If you are buying RAM from Dell, then I'd try it. Otherwise, just be sure the vendor allows returns.

I admit it's odd that Dell is offering a 2GB module.

Hi Jjacobsen74,

Crucial says, "Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 1GB per slot." So it would appear that 2GB modules are not supported.

Thats weird because Dell suggests a 2x2GB Memory upgrade for my desktop? I would assume if dell suggests this as an upgrade to purchase through there website that 2GB per slot would work, no?

I thought it was odd as well because I to saw the specs indicating a 1GB max per slot. I just wondered if the recent Bios update maybe made it possible to install 2GB per slot? Oh well, I'll try it and if it doesnt work I guess I will return them for 4x1GB sticks, I was really hoping to get dual channel 4GB memory.

Ok, let me know. I have seen Crucial show higher capacity modules than what Dell lists on their specs page, but in this case, it's the same. But the Dell specs have been wrong before.

Well great news!! The specs are indeed wrong! I'm running 2X2GB @ 800MHz in Dual Channel mode smoothly...so far! All I have to say is thank goodness! I was really going to be heart broken if these speedy little sticks weren't compatible with my desktop. So for all the Inspirion 531 users that thought they couldn't upgrade...DO IT!!! What a huge difference from the factory 2x1GB sticks.

That raises the question whether 4 x 2GB modules would work.
