memory problems

I recently buy a XPS 630i with 4 gig ram and vista 32 bit but when i go into dell support and under about your system/memory,it tells me my total memory is at 2.7 g and memory available 1.7g.

I would like too know if this normal or if there is a problem with the memory.(should it be at 4G total memory)?

My other problem is that i cannot use sli on any of my games which really seems abnormal too me,and everytimes i play a game everything is really chopping.

Thx for the help in advance.

niamor; Welcome to DCF

If you do a search here on DCF, you will note lots of threads about this issue.

It is related to your OS.... 32-Bit OS will utilize 2.5 to 3.5 Gig RAM max.

Whereas 64-Bit OS will utilize up to 128Gig (Depending on your Motherboard and OS)

Your machine (If you upgrade to 64-Bit OS) will utilize up to 8Gig max.

for more info go to Tech Specs here:

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_630?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

Under Memory section, you will note:

Up to 4GB 3 Corsair® DOMINATOR® Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (800MHz, 2 or 4 DIMMs, overclockable to 1066MHz)
If you click on the number 3 above where it says """Up to 4GB 3 Corsair...""
You will see:
Important Details
* 4GB Memory or Greater - The total amount of available memory will be less, depending on actual system configuration.
Peace

Hey,

there is no way to get a 32bit vista to work with all 4GB of ram.

You need to change to 64bit vista to get this benefit.

The SLY issue is maybe related to the SLY connector on the two cards.

Check if the connector is well seted up on bozh cards.

so basically i should upgrade to a 64bit vista?or do you know a solution that the 32 bit version could recognize is full potential(3.5G)?

Is my problem with SLI related to this too?

thx for your help

I upgraded to 64 a few months ago, and could not be happier.

The system feels more robust and solid than when I ran it with 32

I have now 8Gig RAM in the system, and that would be another thing I would recommend as 64 will be more RAM hungry.

Before you jump into 64, make sure to check with the makers of your peripherals and software to know if everything will work with 64.

Unless your peripherals (Printer, scanner and cameras, etc) and your software are over 2 years old that will not be an issue, but for any legacy software you want to be absolutely certain.
