Microphone Connector
My new Dell Dimension 8200 - I want to set up telephony. Where's the microphone connector? The diagram on p. 87 of Dell's Solutions Guide shows 3 connectors under the 2 USB connectors but they aren't on the back of my pc - strange! Guide me, please. Many thanks.

Pixypop,
The microphone connector should be a red or pink colored jack on the back of you your computer where the sound card shows through the case. Only if you have integrated sound will it be next to the USB ports. See the following:
If you told us which sound card you have, we could point you to the documentation for that card that will show where the micorophone connects. For example if you have a Soundblaster Live card, the following documentation shows this:

That diagram shows a 'generic' Dimension 8200 with AD1885 integrated audio. You must have a PCI sound card in your system, which will look like the item outlined in yellow on the image below. Dell installs sound cards in PCI slot 1 in most of the current Dimension models so your sound card will be two slots above where the one in the image is.
The microphone jack is the red one (it may appear more pinkish to you though).

Steve, Thanks for the diagram. My pc is exactly like it EXCEPT the 3 slots halfway down on the left are not there. There's nothing below the USBs. The five slots you highlighted yellow are there. The first two from left to right have my speakers connected; the other 3 (pink, blue and yellow) are empty. Are you saying I should put the microphone in the 3rd slot (the pink one)?
Sorry if I seem stupid, but I don't wanna mess up my new pc :-)
Regards

Hi,
Have you tried pluging the Mic into the sound card and messing with the modem and sound card settings? I don't know what software you are using to let you use the modem as a speakerphone so I can only suggest general ideas.
And really, messing is a technical term.

Wow, the replies are flowing in fast! Namek - it was you who sent the helpful diagram, not Steve. Thanks.
Thereal, the software came with the new pc - it's Classic Phone Tools (and I hope it works!!)
Thanks again - you're a wunnerful bunch.
