microphone doesn't work

I just bought a Coby CM-P24 (with a 3.5 mm plug) Microphone for my Dimension 8300. It says on the front that it's "FOR SOUND REPRODUCTION ON ALL COMPUTERS AND AUDIO EQUIPMENT".  I tried everything but could not get the mic to record my voice. The system sound works fine except for the mic. Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong? This should be a simple thing but for some unknown reason it's not. Please help if you can. Thanks.

First make sure you are plugging it into the  microphone jack (Pink color jack) (If you have a mic jack on the front, try the rear Pink jack to see if the front jack is not working).  Computer mic's need a low voltage to run the microphone and the "mic jack" is the only one that has that.  Second, check the Volume Control panel and make sure the microphone is not muted and/or the volume control slider the mic is not in the down (off) position.

Which program are you trying to use to record the microphone?  The 'Windows Recorder will only record from the microphone input, not the Line In.  Other programs may or may not record from the microphone input but you may have to select the microphone as the source in order for it work as many "recording" programs default to the Line In.

Thanks for trying to help. The problem was that the MUTE box was checked by itself. I made sure it was unchecked but somehow it rechecked all by itself. This is another of the many mistakes that is in windows software. Bill Gates is laughing all the way to the bank until we all purchase his next windows upgrade.
