Microphone Problems
I am having problems using my microphone in Windows XP Home. I am using a Dell Dimension 5100c. I can go to control panel, open up "Sound and audio devices," and under the mic section I click on "recording control, and check the "select" button for the volume on the microphone. The mic will work on my sound recorder, but the next time I try to use the microphone it does not work. When I return to recording control, I find the clicked "select" button has automatically unclicked itself. Also my mic volume is real low, even though, it is set to maximum volume. This problem is preventing me fom using Dragon Naturally Speaking and MSN messager audio because of no mike sound or recording input. I have used another mic on this system and it does the same way. Any ideas as to the cause and cure of this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ok, I fixed this problem on my pc with the help of a dell rep. Not sure if this will help you guys:
The problem was with the creative surround mixer. Double-click on the creative audio thing in the system tray to bring it up or access it from programs etc. Once loaded, you should see a bunch of sliders in three general categories. Master Control, Source, and Rec. On the last slider in Source, there should be a pulldown button above it. Click it and select "Microphone". That brings up the mic channel. On my pc, the microphone slider was deactivated at the bottom. Click the button below the slider if it has a red X on it to activate it. Raise the volume up to max. Lastly, there is a red plus sign above the pulldown button. Click on that to get an extra 20db added to your mic. Working fine for me now. Hope this helped you guys out.

Thanks Fate!
I finally was able to get my mic working following your instructions. The strange thing is that I have to leave my recording control window open on screen and the mic select checked. If I close the window, even though, it is checked, it will uncheck automatically and the mic will not work. Thanks for the reply and help.

I dont know whether you got the second message I sent you or not. I was able to get my mike working after opening control panel, then opening sounds and audio devices and choosing the mike window, then opening voice, and recording control. I checked select at the bottom of the window, and my mic began to work again. It works fine, but I have to leave the recording control window open on my screen. If I close it, it automatically unchecks the mike and the mike will not work. That certainly is not normal. I believe it has to do with the digital sound intergration on my mother board. I hope that new sound card solves your problems. Wishing you the best!
