Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver?

Hi,

After unsuccessful and painful SP2 installs and uninstalls, I found "!" mark at the "Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver" in "Device Manager".  I don't know what it is or how to correct it.

1. I tried to "Update Driver" - nothing available.
2. I tried to "Roll back Driver" - nothing happened as there has never been driver update.
3. I tried Dell's "Driver Reset Tool" - sure, it detected the said driver is not well, but couldn't do anything about it.
4. I upgraded Chipset Driver from Dell's site, as well as BIOS A03

5. Probably unrelated - the system started to try to read the Floppy drive AFTER booted up as well as when shutting down.  I know the system would try to read the floppy first when powered on, but it should be way before XP is up and running.  Mine does AFTER XP is (almost) up.  This never happened before.  Weird.  Will someone please explain what is happening here?

Hmnn.  Will someone help me or enlighten me - What is Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver?

My 8400 had been working flawlessly like new until I mistakenly tried to update to SP2.  That was one evil software for some peoople.

Thank you very much in advance!

Ken

Hi Steve,

Thanks.  I did install the chipset drivers per instruction of Dell download pages.  Would you explain a little more about "you may have to uninstall other devices then reinstall them after the chipset drivers are present".  I could not find how to uninstall the previous chipset driver...  Thanks again.

Try installing the chipset drivers for your motherboard.  If these drivers were not the first drivers installed after reinstalling Windows, you may have to uninstall other devices, then reinstall them after the chipset drivers are present.

The only way I know of fixing this is reinstall the chipset drivers.

Are you sure it isn't the SMBUS Driver?  What devices show up in Device Manager as problem devices?

Hi Steve,

Like I said in the original post, the problem device (with "!" mark) in "Device Manager" is:

"System Devices" -> "Microsoft System Maangement BIOS Driver".
