Modem not detected

Hello, novice here.

I just received (gift) a Dell Dimension 4600c Desktop, windows xp sp2, 2.66 ghz pentium 4, 256mb ram, no OS discs.

I know it has a pci 56k modem card because I can see the phone line leads in the back. It does not however show up under device manager. No modem category at all.

Don't know if this is related, but the "pci simple communications controller" has a yellow exclamation mark by it.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance.

There are 10 modem drivers listed under the 4600c. You need to power down, open the case cover and look at the modem for a part number so we can find the driver.

Hi Cedre,

Here are the modem drivers for that system. I can't say that I'm sure which is the correct one. Perhaps armed with these model numbers, you can find a clue on the modem.

Osprey4 , muto, thanks for replying.

Muto, I wasn't able to ID the pci simple communication controller from the device manager.  Manufacturer comes up as unknown. One category (general) says the driver isn't installed. Another (details) says I don't need a driver. Not sure which one is correct. Here's a screenshot:: img285.imagevenue.com/img.php

I did however find my service tag number. It says that my modem is a 5W417 Modem, V.92, Data Fax, Low Profile, and recommends the Intel Driver 9/5/2006 2.15.57.4-WHQL, A06 537E,v.9X,PCI,Modem.  Think I should go with that one?

Thanks.

Thanks for replying again muto. I will try your original driver suggestion first, and see  if it works. It's good to know that a wrong driver won't screw anything up. I didn't know that.

Hello SpeedStep, thanks for posting.

I think the driver you posted is the same one muto recommended. And I tried that one 1st muto, and it seems to have worked perfectly. The "pci simple communication controller" is gone from the device manager, and the modem now appears. Got all my stuff installed, and everything(modem) seems to be working fine.

Glad I waited, and went with your recommendation instead of the driver the "service tag" recommended, although it is 1 of the 4 drivers listed on the 4600C page.

Anyway like I said everything seems to be working fine now. I want to thank everyone who posted here, but a special thanks to muto. Thanks a lot man for all your help.
