Monitor not reading tower

I plug the tower in and it turns on, fan runs, and lights are on. I plug it to the monitor and the monitor does not read it. The monitor is on and works with another computer but not this one. Please help!

You see nothing on screen, not even the Dell logo?

What color is the PC's power button and is it steady or blinking?

Do you have an add-in video card or are you using onboard video? If you have an add-in video card, is monitor connected to the card which would be at least half way down from top of the tower, and not to the onboard video connectors which are much closer to the top?

How are you connecting monitor to PC? VGA or HDMI?

Have you tried a known working video cable?

OK...no dell logo on screen, just a black screen that looks like it is in sleep mode.

the tower has a steady blue light with a black button.

there is no add-in video card, only the onboard video. i have been looking into this problem and i have seen suggestions of buying a new video card.

i have connected the monitor to the tower with a blue VGA cable...should i try HDMI? there is a slot for it.

We have hooked the screen up to our laptop and it has worked fine.

If you have an HDMI cable handy, can't hurt to try it.

An add-in video card might be something to try, especially if you can 'borrow' one from another PC. You need a PCI-e x16 HALF HEIGHT video  card to fit into this system.
