Msconfig

Can I use Msconfig (selective starup) to try and correct the fact that my system will not shut down? Will it cause me to have to reinstall windows?

Additionally, when I try to run my desktop tv it gives me the error message that an overlay surface is not available and tells me to change the screen resolution. Nothing is working...what should I do?

Also, once I post, how do I then find my posting?

Thanks

1. Yes. 2. No. 3. Desktop TV? What's that? Try the Software conference for your OS version. 4. It'll more than likely be the first (most recent) post in the conference. Copy the shortcut (subject title) to return later.

I've run msconfig on a variety of sets so many times it isn't even funny, and never had to reinstall Windows as a result. It's a valuable diagnostic tool that can uncover a lot of problems, when used according to adequate instructions. At best, if you uncheck something that shouldn't be unchecked, you might have to go back in and re-check it.

I'm the wrong person to be addressing the TV thing. I've sworn off it since that guy with the humongous chin replaced Johnny Carson.

My PCs occasionally try to restart in something other than Normal mode after an improper shutdown. I've just chalked it up to another one of the incomprehensible quirks of Windows, and just select Normal mode when the option is presented.

Thanks for your help. Someone had told me if I used the msconfig to figure out the shutdown problem, I would end up reinstalling windows.

The desktop tv allows me to use the pc to run television. I hook up the cable to the tv card...

An additional question, why the computer boot in safemode after an incorrect shut down?

Thanks...

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer! I am a news junkie...use the desk top as a tv and my lap top as a pc.

The next thing I am going to learn is to open the case and make sure a card is seated properly. I think the parity error message is occurring due to the card moving...it was taken out once and not put back in correctly I fear.

Thanks again. b.
