Multi-socket CPU upgrade

I am looking at a new Precision 490 and am considering ordering the machine with the fastest quad core Xeon available (2.66GHz). Can I order the machine with one cpu now and then order a boxed CPU 6 months or a year from now and plug it into the empty socket? Would I have to reinstall Windows or anything else? What other gotchas are there? Anyone from Dell, would this affect my warranty at all?

I do plenty of video and 3d rendering, so I can definitely use the extra cores, but figured it makes sense financially to add one later. I just want to know if putting a CPU in is similar to a memory upgrade in terms of simplicity.

Try searching the forums to see if other people were able to add (or if the 490 and 690 are the same except for size) the retail CPU.
I know of a few people that did on the 690 even though the heat sink in the retail box is a bit different they all said it fit without problems.
Windows, since it already has multi core support will see the new cores without a re-install.
The cpu install is more difficult but Dell has full technical manuals and diagrams on-line so you will have full reference available.
As far as warranty goes Dell will not 'support' the add in CPU unless you get it from Dell and it really does not matter since Intel will have the warranty on the cpu and they are so seldom bad that you should not worry about it.
