Multimedia Audio Controller

I reinstalled XP on my Dimensions 4500. I can't update the Multimedia Audio Controller (this must be why I have no sound on my computer).

It's original software when I bought my Dell.

It's not on my Resource CD.

It's not listed here as a download.

How can I update my Multimedia Audio Controller so I once again have sound?

Read the reply to your post from yesterday, in which you wrote:

"When I reformatted all I did was follow the prompts from the windows cd."

Which more than likely means you haven't reinstalled any drivers, starting with the Chipset drivers.

"Now I have no sound. There is not a speaker/volume control on my task bar anymore."

That will happen, when you don't install the device drivers.

"When I go into Control Panel...sounds and audio device properties...
it says:
No Audio Device
everything is greyed out."

See above.  Use the Reinstall Guide to install the necessary drivers, then you'll have sound.

"It's not on my Resource CD."

"It" (meaning your drivers) is on your Drivers and Utilities CD, just like it says in the Reinstall Guides for your system.

"It's not listed here as a download."

That's because you're not looking for Audio Drivers...which are on your Drivers and Utilities CD.

See this. What you need to do and how you need to do it is going to depend to a certain extent on which sound card/audio device you have installed, which I have no way of knowing. If you have a Soundblaster Live! card, the drivers are on a separate CD from Creative. Dell indicates that one should download the drivers for the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card, if you have the OEM version of that. The integrated sound drivers are on the Drivers and Utilities CD. Click on "What Sound Card do I have in my Dellâ„¢ Dimensionâ„¢ 4500 and how do I Install it?" in the linked article to determine what you need.

Hi Flooby,

Ooops...Sorry, my mistake for using the wrong term for the CD.

When I referred to 'Resource CD' I meant the one that reads:
Drivers and Utilities
Dell Dimension ResourceCD for Reinstalling Device Drivers
and Using Diagnostic, Utilities, and Online Documentation

It had Resource CD on it and that's what stuck for me :)

In your reply to my first post here I found out about needing to install the chipset...Thanks!
That updated nicely :) I think. The ~yellow ?~ thingy disappeared.
The Multimedia One couldn't be found and updated the same way. That's when I came back
and tried again to explain what my trouble was.

Thanks so much for your help!
