Netopia Wireless USB Adapter not recognised after startup
I had a Netopia Wireless USB Adapter working on my old computer with Windows 98 with no problems. I have just got a new Dell 5000 computer with XP Service Pack 2, and have installed the Netopia software and adapter successfully, or so I thought. My problem is that every time I shut down, the next time I switch on the computer, the adapter is not recognised. In Device Manager it shows as an unknown device. If I disconnect and reconnect it, the system detects and recognises it correctly, but next day same problem. Once detected and recognised it functions perfectly.
I have tried:
1. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software
2. Updating the driver
3. Uninstalling the device, the USB Hub and the USB Controller and then rebooting to get them reinstalled
4. Connecting to different USB ports
5. Clearing the startup options (at Dell Tech Support's request)
6. Verifying
the USB Controller option is on in BIOS
7. Downloading and installing the R86201.EXE software utility (also at Dell Tech Support's request)
None of these have solved the problem. I have come to the conclusion the device is not getting power when I power up the computer.
On my old computer (also a Dell), at startup the adapter's 'active' light would flash as soon as I powered the computer on, on the new machine it doesn't. I tried installing on my HP notebook and it works fine, also 'active' light flashes as soon as I power on. I would appreciate any suggestions on this, as it is most irritating to have to disconnect and reconnect the adapter every day. Dell Tech Support have not come back to me in 3 days, and Netopia just sent me an updated driver for a different device and have also not replied since I pointed this out to them.

To what USB port is this device connected?

I have tried every available USB port, front and rear.
1. On the new Dell Dimension 5000, the problem only occurs if I do a Shutdown, then switch the computer back on. If I do a restart (having already disconnected and reconnected the device to get it correctly recognised) it works fine.
2. When I connected the adapter to the USB port where a mouse would normally go (I have a wireless keyboard/mouse combination so the mouse port is free) it got detected and worked ok, but after shutting down the computer would not reboot - it froze when the progress bar was almost at the end on the BIOS screen. It would only reboot when I removed the adapter from that port.
3. When I first connected the adapter to a USB port the New Hardware Detected wizard ran twice - the first time to install a Samsung USB Boot Device (driver swlubtl) and the second time to install the Netopia adapter (driver swld23u) - this also happened when I installed it on the notebook. Samsung is the driver provider for the adapter.
4. I have an unpowered USB Hub from my old system - I connected this to see would it exhibit similar problems and it does not. It is correctly detected after a shutdown. I then connected the Netopia adapter to this but it still wasn't recognised after a shutdown.
5. Although the system documentation says all the USB ports are USB 2, none of the controllers for the USB ports shows as enhanced in Device Manager when I view devices by connection - there is one entry for an enhanced USB Controller with 8 ports, but I gather it is the internal one that a media card reader (which I don't have) would connect to. However the notebook's USB ports are not all connected to enhanced controllers either, and the Netopia adapter worked fine in an ordinary port, also worked fine on an ordinary port on the old computer, so I don't think this is relevant to the problem. I would nevertheless appreciate some comment about why my USB ports are not connected to enhanced controllers.
Thanks

I have almost the same problem with my Dimension 5000 and a Netgear MA111v2 wireless USB adapter. I have removed/installed drivers several times, but after a shutdown of the Dell, it won't recognise the adapter anymore. If I put the same adapter in a Fujitsu machine I have no problems at all. I also have tried all USB ports but none of them seems to work after shutdown.
Because the Netopia Wirelss USB adapter has the same problem, I assume it's the Dell dimension 5000 having problems with wirless USB adapters.
Any help would be appreciated.

An update on this problem:
A friend with a Dimension 5000 installed my Netopia USB Adapter on his machine and it had the same problem. However his Belkin adapter works fine. When I informed Dell Support they told me it must be a BIOS problem, and to wait for the next BIOS Version. So I bought a Belkin adapter and that's what I'm using now.
