new memory module

Full disclosure - this is probably a dumb question, but here goes: I have an old Dimension 4300 - from early part of the current millenium. It runs slow, so I bought a 512Mb memory module from Dell (it got here fast - thanks Dell). I followed instructions opening the computer & found both memory slots filled. They look the same as the module I just got, but I have a hunch they're both 256Mb. Here's what the original computer order form says - verbatim - about the memory I got when I bought the computer: 512MB SDRAM at 133MHz,2 DIMMs,Factory Install I hope this means each is 256 Mb & I havent wasted money & time with this little project (I unwisely already unsealed the package). Can anyone confirm? Thanks!

Sounds like you have 2 x 256M installed. You should be able to take one out and put in the 512M. If you want to verify what you have, press F2 at boot and there should be a screen telling you what memory is installed.

You may have to clear NVRAM (reset BIOS settings) after installing the new RAM module to force it to recognize the new memory. Instructions are here:

The 4300 supports only 512 MB RAM, so you were maxed out before. Sorry.

However, someone recently was able to get his machine (model?) to recognize more than the posted maximum; search the Forums. Try installing the 512 MB module in the #1 slot and leave the 256 MB module in the second. If it boots and runs........ Most likely it won't.

I researched the memory module I wanted on Dell's website - recommended by Dell for Dimension 4300. Why would Dell offer memory modules for sale for the Dimension 4300 if they dont work?

I looked at those instructions - I dont have enough knowledge to follow - I'm lost at 3 pin cmos jumper & get more lost from there. From Dell's website I got the impression that these memory modules are plug & go - very simple. If I get into this kind of trouble my computer probably wont be working & I'll be unable to get further help online - owner's manual has nothing - is there a number I can call for help?

I looked at the forum per your suggestion & it seems there's difference of opinion on this. One poster says buy from an outfit called Crucial & you can get 1000Mb. I'm unclear on 2 things. Do I have to buy from Crucial to get it to work? And can I use a 512 module next to a 256 module?

Dell PCs can be finicky about RAM modules. If you buy from Crucial, they'll guarantee it'll work or they take it back.

According to the manual, you can use up to 512K modules in the 4300 with the max total installed RAM being 512K. They must be SDRAM modules.

Don't know what'll happen if you put 512K SDRAM in one slot and a 256K in the other. Might not boot, might boot anyway. Seems doubtful it'll recognize more than 512K.
