No video after adding memory

I have an older XPS_T that I am giving to someone.  I wanted to upgrade the memory as the system still works pretty well.  I purchased two 256MB PC100 DIMMS (Per the memory FAQ in this forum and the manual).  There is currently a 128mb DIMM in there now.  When I add the new memory I don't get any Video when the system POSTS.  So I can't tell if anything is working or not.  I've tried various combinations including just one 256mb dimm, both, all (including the 128mb), etc..  Still no video.  When I put the 128 back in by itself, the system works fine.

is there anyway to tell if the memory is good?  I'd hate to send it back to find out it was the correct stuff.

The only thing I noticed is that the original memory says it's "CL=2" and the new DIMMS are "cl=3".  Does that make any difference?  I couldn't find any memory w/ the cl=2.

Thanks!

Thanks..

I was on crucial earlier and noticed the cl2 vs cl3 explanation...but they don't make it sound like it's that big a deal other than it might be a little slower.  I wouldn't see why that would make a huge difference, especially if I pull the original DIMM out.  various MBs can take PC133 or PC100 so I wouldn't think the CL2 - CL3 thing would make a huge deal..but I guess I'll try that

cl2 vs. cl3 makes a big difference and could explain why your system doesn't work with the new memory - it's incompatible.  Go to www.crucial.com and use their memory configurator to purchase memory that is gauranteed to work with your system.

It's not CL2.  It's high density memory vs. low density memory. I suspect you just bought the memory vs. buying memory specified for your XPS-T.  Count the chips.  I suspect you'll find 4 on each side of the 256mb modules, you need 8...
