Norton Ghost 9.0 setup for Disk Imaging

Norton Ghost needs the Dell 4600 configuration reset in irder to operate.

How do I:

1. unhide the Dell Utility partition

2. un-install disk manager

This will clear Ghost to perform a disk image backup

Thanks for your help

1. use gdisk (on the ghost disc).

2. Not sure what it wants - is it confused by the Dell boot sector? You may be better off doing a direct sector copy (true clone) of the disc.

If you are trying to clone a disk to replace it, I highly recommend Acronis over Ghost.  Everything is automatic and it works the first time.  Just my 2 cents.

Europa,

That utility really looks good.  You don't have to make boot disks either.  Thanks for the link.

I have a Dell 2300 and its hard drive has the hidden Dell partion and I use Drive Image 2002 for backing up my pc and have no trouble what so ever. I do nothing special at all.

I know its 2002 but its reliable, its fast and handy burning back up images to my 2nd IDE Hard Drive.

Thanks for the info.

What I am trying to do is to build a DVD(s) image of the system before I turn it loose on my son & his family. I have had to rebuild it 5 times already from the 7 CD image set and the bring all the software & Win OS current. That is a 1 1/2 day job.

Yes, I have multiple levels of protections but something always gets through. I am now at WinXP SP2 with their apps loaded , antivirus and firewall set. All they need to do is strat using it. THiat is why I was upset when the Norton Ghost failed.

I will look at the others to see if they burn DVDs and will use them.

Any otre thiugts would be appreciated.

I use Ghost 9.0 and it works quite well.  However, I burn the images to another drive in files that fit on a DVD, then copy them over.  I have it backup daily, then incrementally, and then weekly I image all computers to a Backup Server.

Thanks to all posters -

I have resolved the problem - both hardware & software but  mostly --- operator

The core issue was that I believed I needed RW media to do an image backup. Since I never worked with the RW media, I did not know you had to format it first. That was the hang with Norton Ghost.

I did procure Acronis True IMage and it looked like the better system. I formatted a +RW disk and it failed on a device error. It seems that Acronis only supports -RW. After a few hours of figuring this out, I reloaded Norton and it went just fine with the +RW.

This sytem came with a +RW DVD burner only.
