Number Lock Key
Dell XPS 8700 Windows 8.1 - I need my Number Lock to stay on at all times, went to regedit, found all instances of InitialKeyboard and changed value to "2". Still have to turn numlock on when starting the system and numlock turns off when switching to other users. What did I do wrong?
Thanks, Alan

If you search these forums, this has been an on-going issue with the XPS 8700.
Do you have the latest version of BIOS (A10)? Don't remember if one of the updates addressed this problem.
You can also try this which fixed it for some others:
Assuming Win 8 or 8.1:

Power on and very quickly press F2 to open BIOS setup, Look for the Num Lock option and change to ON if not set that way. Be sure to save the change and exit setup.

Ron, numlock is set to "on" in the Bios and I used regedit to search for and find all instances of "InitialKeyboard" and all have been changed to a value of "2". Numlock should be on and stay on but it is not on after startup and goes off when switching users. I am beginning to think that there may actually be fault in this computer as all these things that should be simple fixes are not. I am supposed to get a call from Dell's level 3 support team on Tuesday for User folder problems so maybe they can help.
Thanks for the help, Alan

Yes, I do have the latest BIOS, down loaded it a couple days ago.
That seems to have worked, changing the option didn't turn numlock on but after the numlock was turned on via they keyboard it stays on while switching users.
I'll watch for a few days but, WOW, Excellent! A small but very annoying problem solved.
Thanks Ron, much appreciated. Alan

Glad that works for you.
Amazing how the engineers can mess up something as basic as num lock...

Amen, it still is not 100% right but now it is workable, only have to turn it on once now. It seems that when you change a setting on the tile side of 8.1 and then switch to desktop side or vice versa it may not have changed there or it may do something totally unexpected. All part of the 8.1 learning curve, I guess.
Thanks, Alan
