I have an Old Optiplex GXI System bought seconhand to play with ! Windows 2000 Pro 128mb Pentium111 450hz 100mhz side bus  Everything else standard (Have updated the Bio to A 1.10 from 1.07) If I try to load any games usually a message appears saying I need to install Open GL. Have tried to look for the correct Driver but it is confusing which one is actually the correct one to download and I dont want to "Mess it up" by installing incorrect drivers.

If any one can offer advice or point me in the right direction ie which one is the correct driver to download and how to do it I would be very gratefull.

Also any tips on upgrading this system.

If its A GX1 and not a GXi AKA GX one not GX aye then you are ok.
You just need the ATI XPERT98 rage pro drivers for OPENGL support.

The rage pro is recognized by WIN98SE and up but the native Microsoft drivers do not support Opengl or Direct3D.

You need to download Directx 8.1b for WIN9X,ME,2000 but not XP XP comes with directx 8.1

The onboard ISA crystal Audio sound will be choppy in most games.  A CMI8738 pci sound card will fix that after disabling the onboard sound.

For win9x
http://download.microsoft.com/download/win98/Install/8.1/W98Me/EN-US/DX81eng.exe

For win2000
http://download.microsoft.com/download/DirectX/Update/8.1b/NT5/EN-US/DX81NTeng.exe

Hi

Thanks for your answers.

First of all I will need to purchase one of the Sound Cards you mentioned, can you point me in the right direction where I can get one.

Secondly how do I disable the onboard Sound card.

Thirdly, can my onboard Graphics card be disabled as well and a better one installed? If this possible where also might I purchase one and what is the procedure for installation etc?

I have just bought a good secondhand Pentium111 700mhz processor to upgrade from my 450 I have at the moment, as I have updated the Bios from A07 TO  A10 is it correct that the Bios won`t recognise a faster processor and I will have to Re-Flash back to A07?

Further to the above I see you can by a Slot converter so you can use a 370 pin Processor, if this is also possible what would be the type and fastest processor I could purchase?

Just to confirm my System

GX1 450L

"Service tag" KV6BE

Cheers

Bios Higher than A07 will not allow cpus faster than 600Mhz.

Try Getting a CMI8738 based PCI sound card and a Geforce4 420MX PCI video card.

You disable onboard sound from the F2 CMOS setup screen. Then install the CMI8738 card. Then a Geforce4 card.

If you cant find a Geforce4 then you can use a Geforce FX 5200 PCI card.

Most ALL games will run with this combination. Even MOHAA, Prince of Persia sands of time, Battlefield 1942, etc.

Then you can add a Powerleap adaptor with 1.0 to 1.4 Ghz Celeron if you need a few more FPS.
