Optical Mouse Problem - CURSOR keeps jumping around. Help!
I JUST purchased a Dell 9100 desktop and hooked it up over the weekend. For some reason my Optical mouse's cursor "jumps" around the screen when I use the mouse. I'll be dragging the mouse right, and it might just decide to go down, or up, or delay and then go somewhere else - the PC and everything in it are BRAND NEW right from Dell. Why would this be happening? Anyone with ANY sort of information please help as this is extremely annoying. Thanks.

Okay I read on another message board that mouse problems could mean your video driver needs to be updated. I downloaded the latest driver from the Dell site and so far, so good with my mouse. Maybe this is the answer...you might want to try it.

I don't know why, but the same thing happened to me after installing a new keyboard on an older machine. When I went back to the old keyboard everything was OK.
Dell has had problems with this since at least 2001, technical support doesn't seem to provide legitmate answers. Good luck.

Okay here is the answer to the optical mouse problem ...
any shiny surface that your mouse is used on, will reflect the optical beam back into the bottom of the mouse. This reflection confuses the directional signal .. this is what makes the mouse move spiradically across the screen. Simple solution.... do not use a mouse pad at all, or make sure that the one you do use has NO SHINY surface. No drivers to have to download and nothing to replace.
Dell will not replace the shiny mouse pad for you ~ I tried, they said ... NOPE !! lol . Why they make a mouse pad that is not user friendlt .. who knows. It now is a coffee cup coaster... LOL !!
Hope this makes your mouse problems go away. Take care.

I think you're right. I changed back to my old mouse pad which is not shiny at all and so far the problem has not returned. Thanks for the info. How did you happen to come up with this solution? Just curious.

Hi Janice.... it was a tip from another person on this post. It made sense to me as well ~ as even a shiny desk top makes the mouse react the same way. Funny huh .. something that causes so much trouble can be fixed so quickly... hope your mouse 'behaves now'
