optiplex 170l bios boot sequence problem

i have updated my bios to AO9 on my optiplex 170l.
i have installed a 160gb SATA hd as a secondary data drive and it has been formatted and recognized by the machine.
i have also added a second cd drive, which has not been recognized and now my primary cdrw drive is gone.

drive config. under bios

*SATA Primary Drive......................Hard Drive
*Primary Master Drive....................Hard Drive
Primary Slave Drive.....................OFF
Secondary Master Drive..................OFF
Secondary Slave Drive...................OFF
IDE Drive UDMA..........................ON

*drive type auto

Boot sequence
Hard Disk Drive C:

in boot menu

1. normal
2. sata primary
3. primary master
4. diskette drive
5. hard disk drive c:

if i manually pick #3 computer will boot to os
if i don't go into the boot menu the computer won't boot
neither of the cd drives are listed as installed or bootable options?

is there a way to recognize all of my peripherals and storage and get the machine to boot on start-up
do i need to manually change the jumper config on the devices?

vtgolf,

Welcome to the Dell Community Forums.

First for the drives, you would need to turn on the drives in the BIOS, you need to set the primary and secondary IDE drives to On. Also make sure you set the jumpers to cable select.

As far as the boot problem I would suggest resetting the NVRAM. You can follow the instructions in your manual from the Dell website.

when i put the ide hd jumper on cs the computer tries to boot to the sata drive with no OS. when i put the ide hd jumper on master the bios does not recognize the ide hd. is there a way to change the boot order so that the sata is not the first drive the computer looks for? if i manually boot f12 to windows on the ide drive the sata drive shows up as a storage drive. what is stopping the computer from automatically booting to the ide hd with windows, i guess is my question? thanks

vtgolf,

You would need to check in the BIOS to see about changing the boot order. You would need to set the Primary Master drive above the SATA drive in the boot order. If it doesn't allow you to do that, then there is no way to change it.

thanks for your response. i've tried everything i know to try. i don't know how to change the boot order. is there a way to do that with the dell bios? if not, is it possible to transfer the OS across from the ide drive to the sata drive?

vtgolf,

There is software out there that will allow you to clone the drives. Acronis and Norton Ghost are two popular packages.
