Optiplex 780, HDTV, setup?
I have a Optiplex 780. I want to hook up to my new HDTV to watch Netflix and other free movies from the internet. I understand that I need to install a graphics card that has HDMI (minimum) port. I have read that I could do without a graphics card and just use a VGA and an audio cable. I don't do much else similar although I might like to be able to burn DVDs but that isn't important. Anybody know what I REALLY need?

It's really easy. There are two options:
USB to HDMI converter:
bzbexpress.com/.../HDMI-Converter-USB-Atlona.html (you will need also to install drivers on your PC)
Or, as you mentioned, you can use VGA to HDMI Converter:

VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. There are VGA to HDMI active converters but they cost MORE than an Asus HD5450. The ASUS EAH5450 works fine in ALL models of 780 EXCEPT USFF.

You want a video card with full hardware support for HD video. Typically that means a 5450 or 6450.
