Thanks for the advice!  I re-installed the memory and it gave me back the monitor, but now it just stays on the Windows XP startup screen. The scroll indicator just goes & goes, would this still be an issue with the memory?

Hello suaverx7, Without knowing the number and sequence of the beeps, it would be hard to tell.

But many times, memory issues can cause this type of problem.

Some have resolved the issues by removing and reseting the memory modules.

Just a thought.

The beeps are important and you need to see if you decypher the sequence. 3&4 lights indicate memory problems. the beep may be related too codes for beeps and lights are HERE

Suggest you try this. remove all the memory sticks from the computer. Then place one memory stick in slot #1 and boot the system see if you get any error indications. IF not and the system boots, shut it down and swap out the memory stick with another. try again. do this with however many memory modules you have. Any time you do not get a successful boot you know the memory stick is bad.

I did not do the diagnostic test yet, because now I get a blue screen telling me to that problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage...VER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Then is says to start up in safe mode, but when I try it will not let me use the mouse or keyboard to enter an administrator password which it''s askinf for. ???????

Hello suaverx7, It could still be a memory issue.

I would try to enter the BIOS and do a hardware diagonostic test to insure that you have no hardware issues.

If you do have some faulty memory modules, you might remove them and re-install them one at a time and see if the system will boot.

If the hardware diagnostic test shows no hardware failures, you might try to enter safe mode and restore the system to an earlier point and see if this corrects some possible data corruption.

If the system shows the Windows XP Startup screen, you have transferred control of the system to the operating system, and you may have some data corruption preventing the system from booting completely into the desktop.

Hope this helps.

Did the owner have one? if so you will need it.

You could still have memory issues. Or a corrupt system file or two or the hd is starting to go. At this point it migh just be better to try doing a windows repair

Repair Reinstall XP

Repair Reinstall Vista

Hello suaverx7, When the system boots, at the Dell Logo screen, press F2 and enter the BIOS wheere you can perform a hardware test.

The system appears to be trying to boot into Windows and there is data or driver issues that prevent it from doing so.

We need to determine if the system has a hardware defect of if it is software related.

If all else fails, you can reset the BIOS to factory defaults which should allow your USB devices to be enabled.

Hope this helps.

Try seeing if you can boot into safemode. Tap the F8 key at the Dell screen and choose safe mode.

You may have to do a windows repair.

This was what I had,  memory modules are detected, but memory failure has occured with lights 3&4 on. I reset the memory and the lights as well as beeps have not occured again. Now what I have is a blue screen which states...problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage - VER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Hello again,

Is there a file name after the error you list?

Is the installed RAM new, or what came with the system?

There is no file name, and this is the RAM that came with the system.
