You didn't say what model PC you have. Is there a chipset driver that should have been installed immediately after you reinstalled Windows, and before you installed all the other drivers?
Without the exact model number of your Dimension, it's impossible for me to find the chipset for you. So, hover your mouse over "Desktop" on the blue bar at top of any forum web page. Select Dimension. Enter either your model number or service tag number and follow the links to the page with available downloads for your system. Look for one labeled 'chipset'. Download and install it. Download any other updated drivers for your system, while you're there, too.
You may have to uninstall the video and audio drivers, install the chipset, and then reinstall the other drivers to get it to work properly. But try just installing the chipset first.
I have the Dimension L900CXE. I don’t see anything for this model in the available downloads that reference ‘chipset’. I searched ‘chipset’ but am not sure what direction to take from there. Your help is greatly appreciated. I have a new camera coming and would like to be able to use it right away. Currently I don’t think my PC would recognize any camera.
Otis, concerning the chipset...... I am assuming that you have Windows ME or Windows XP as your installed operating system. If so, the older Dell systems use the native chipset driver built into Windows so there is no need to install a separate chipset driver.
OK, thanks to Majestic for settling the chipset issue. From the original error message, it looks like you're missing the USB drivers for your OS. I believe you got a request for an ME CD, so I'm assuming that's the OS you have.
Here's a link to download USB driver for ME, if you can't extract it from the CAB folder on either the CD or your HD. This site requires free registration, so you might want to google for some other sites that don't, if it matters.
Most of the time --- ME will give the location of a file it was looking for and did not find. If it gives a location for the file USBNTMAP.SYS write the location down. Insert your ME CD, open explorer, assuming your CD drive is D: look for the folder WIn9x. Double click on the folder. Then double click on the folder BASE2. Then locate the following nine (9) files. 1.) USBSTOR, 2.)USBUIDLL, 3.) USBAUTH, 4.) USBCCGP, 5.) USBD, 6.) USBHUB, 7.) USBMPHLP.PDR, 8.) USBNTMAP, 9.) USBPRINT.
Double click on one of the files above and ME will ask where you want to extract the file to. Provide the location provided when ME was unable to locate the file USBNTMAP.SYS. Extract the nine file to that location. Restart computer. It has been several years since I worked with ME so I cannot remember the location ME wants the files extracted to.
As long as you extract those files to either the
C:\WINDOWS or
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, Windows will find them when the time comes. Both those directories are in the Windows default search patch when looking for files to run.
If I could, I would buy all you guys your beverage of choice. I downloaded USBSTOR, AUTH, etc from usb-drivers.com onto floppy as instructed. That did it. Thanks!! Take Care! Merry Christmas. -Otis
vetikke - Did the camera come with a driver or software disk? Did you install the files from that disk before you connected the camera to the PC for the first time? If it has its own software but you connected the camera before installing the software, XP may have installed the wrong drivers.
First, try doing a System Restore to a date before your first attempt to connect the camera and try again. Based on what you said, I gather that it didn't come with it's own software drivers. That said, I'd install whatever software they gave you before connecting the camera again after the System Restore.
If that doesn't do it, you could try the generic fix for USB. Disconnect all USB devices, except mouse and keyboard. Open Device Manager, expand the list under USB and uninstall all USB entries. When you reboot, XP will reinstall the USB ports.
Ron: yes I have eventhough it was unnecessary as the XP version is already " built -in"(I am told by Pentax).I had my camera with its own usb cabel connected to just an unknown PC (not Dell) anywhere, and it works without any software preinstalled.
So I don`t know why it did not work with my Dell Pc at home.
