PCI Input Controller Problems
Hello, I am having this problem while working on a friends Dimension 8100. I have reformated and reloaded the hard drive with Windows ME and now I cannot load up the proper controller drivers. Under control Panel/system/devices I have the yellow question mark next to pci input controller, multimedia and also unknown device. I have downloaded the driver and also tried the resource CD. When I look at properties it says that the drivers are not loaded even though I have loaded them. What's up? I have loaded up many computers and never had this type of problem am I doing something wrong and /or does Dell equipment require some unique procedure that I am unaware of? I really need some help!
Thanks
Bill

Did you load the chipset drivers? These drivers should be the first drivers loaded after installation of Windows ME. You also probably need to install the Dell Solution Center in order to install the drivers for the useless E-Support button. This is likely the unknown device that you see in Device Manager. After installing the Dell Solution Center, it would be a good idea to uninstall the Dell Resolution Assistant which is the software that runs in the background waiting for the E-Support Button to be pressed. Since Dell discontinued Resolution Assistant, there is not need to have this running and consuming valuable system resources in Windows ME.

Hello again, did as you suggested and reformated and loaded windows again, loaded the chipset drivers first and all was well until I put the sound card in and loaded the audio drivers. I again experience under devices the ?PCI Input Controller, ?PCI Multimedia Audio Device amd , my old friend ?Unknown device. I can't figure out how to load the dell solutions center, doesn't seem to be on the resource cd. Any Suggestions would sincerly be appreciated.
Thanks, Bill Y

Which sound card is installed on your machine? Which modem? Sometimes these drivers are on a separate CD. You can also download all possible drivers, inlcuding the Dell Solution Center, from the Dell Download site -
http://support.dell.com/filelib/Devices.aspx?Category=0&OS=WME++&OSL=EN&SvcTag=&SysID=DIM_PNT_P4_8100
Make sure you have logged in to the Dell Support web site by selecting a model (the 8100) in the left-hand pane on the support site in order for this link to work.

The sound card is the one that came with it a Soundblaster Live. The modem I purchased for it is a US Robotics, The original modem went south and that's where the problems started. Right now I do not have the modem installed and I also have not installed the drives for the video, thought I would start with the sound card and try to get it to work. When I had the modem in the machine it worked just fine but I have not re-installed it on this windows load.
Thanks, Bill
