Ok thanks for your replies. I wanted to know because at the moment I am unsure whether to upgrade my dimension 4600 with the previously mentioned Pentium 4 processor or to buy a new system. This is because I need a good spec PC as I am going to be studying computing soon.
Replace the system. Upgrading processors is no longer viable, since chipsets (permanent parts of the motherboard) now become obsolete faster than processors do.
I will be studying computer support and maintenance as I want become a computer technician. I need a PC to run the latest software such as windows vista aero as I need to know how to support this software. Seeing as though the only PC I can afford is one with a Pentium D processor it isn't worth buying as it is only one up with my current processor type.I think I will just upgrade the ram, hard drive and graphics card on my current system.
okay, BUT keep in mind, building your own pc is a lot CHEAPER, and it fits your needs. Sometimes it can even save you a couple hundred dollars, if you build off of www.newegg.com
What are your current specs though? Odds are a Dimension 4600 will be fine for you. You can throw RAM to get 1-2GB, add a Direct X 9 class GPU if you don't already have one, etc.

That 'one step up' is a huge one from a Dim 4600. Any Pentium D Pc will be SATA HDDs/ PCIe Graphics/ DDR2 memory, as well as the much faster CPU...
not bad.. my set up is similar, only i have 1gb of memory, and i got a geforce fx 5200. NOTICE, you could have done better than the 5500, but it can play most games on the market, just a thought! , ravi

yes they are, because pentium 4 is 1 core, and pentium D is 2 cores, hence the name Pentium D or Pentium Dual. , ravi
