Pentium P4

Will the Intel Pentium 4 3.06GHz socket 478 CPU SL6S5 512/533 HT processor work in my Dell Dimension 2400 which currently runs a 2.40 GHZ Celeron. I have updated BIOS to A05 and Intel chipset to V 4.04.1700. Am also concerned about 84watt heat output since the Celeron heat sink does not have a direct fan but sits in the cabinet fan exhaust stream.

My first Turbo machine from PC'S Limited had an 8088 ran at 8mhz.

I remember thinking how fast Windows 2.0 was with a 286 machine with 4 megs of ram.

My first computer was owned by the local university a PDP-8 later upgraded to PDP 11.

As the Socket 478 SL6S5 P4 is a Northwood, it should work fine.

The default Dell heatsink and case fan that's enclosed in the plastic shroud, should work, providing you clean the base of the heatsink and apply new thermal compound.

Bev,

I can't tell you how much you and your advice is appreciated not only by me but the thousands of others. This is what makes this forum so valuable.

I have been buying Dell before it was Dell. It was PC Limited. My first real PC a 286, had a 6/10 MHZ processor with a 20MB HDD. Will never forget, it was delivered in January and the MOBO was cracked in shipment but to determine this the support person talked me along as I tore it apart on the kitchen table. Life has never been the same since. Can't keep my hands out of the hardware!!!
