Please help! boot delay at dell bios screen

I just purchased a 4500 Dimension and am quite pleased with it. However, lately there has been quite a delay (few minutes at least) to boot up. After I turn on the computer, the dell logo just stays there for a few minutes doing god knows what before launching the regular windows xp screen. Everything is fine from then on. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

Yeah, I agree with westomatic, if you have 128meg or more of memory, it takes a while to boot. Most, if not all people enable quick boot all of the time, unless they're having memory problems...

I have only 256 megs of ram, and it booted fast and fine when i first got the system. I did install my intel pocket concert MP3 player to a USB port. How do I enable quickboot?

Hi,

The quickboot option is in BIOS.

To enter BIOS ,press either the DEL key ( or possibly F2 ) as your computer boots, but before it starts Windows.

What you can do is just gently tap the DEL key as the computer boots.

When the command is accepted you will get he message "Entering system setup" or similar on screen, normally at the bottom.

The Quickboot option is norrmally on the boot screen.

I would also review the programs you have automatically starting when your computer boots. Use the lists on Denny Denhams site

http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Index.htm

This site also covers programs not included in Denny's list which is Dell specific.

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

The link to the listing of the programs is below the Introduction

I don't think those other replies are going to help you. You are saying it's before Windows loads, so it has nothing to do with programs in Windows. If I were you, I would remove all the memory modules except one, unplug the floppy, hard drive and cdroms from the motherboard, and plug them back in firmly. Do the same at the drives. If it boots faster, put the rest of the memory back in. If it's not faster, keep trying the memory chips one at a time. I'm fairly certain it is motherboard related and not windows, since it is pausing before windows loads.
