Power supply issues - desktop Studio 540
Hey all, a few days ago we lost power during the night. Next morning I tried to start my Dell back up. No life. On the back of the box there is a green light that stays lit. Tells me that the computer is still getting power. But when I plug the power cable in the computer doesn't do the normal spin of the fans for a second when it gets power. And hitting the power button on the front of the box gives no results. Yeah.
From what I've been reading, it sounds like I've got a dead power supply. Now, I've got a spare Dell, an Inspiron 531, that is the only computer I have with any SATA drives. Other PCs are more old school with IDE. Anyway, it looks like the Inspiron has a 300W power supply whereas my Studio had a 350W. Would my Studio even run on the reduced power?
Also, are these power supplies on the Studios a standard ATX? I've been browsing sites for new power supplies. Just looking at my options.
Appreciate whatever input you all might have!

Hi,
The issue seems to be with the Motherboard as there is green color on the power supply. However you can check with a different power supply to rule out the issue with power supply. Also, I would suggest you reseat a few components, like memory, hard drive and optical drive and see if that makes a difference. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating components.

Please let me know if this helps.

Green LED on the back indicates power is available not that the power supply is Ok.
A Recommended Replacement Power Supply is a SPECIFIC Evga 110-B1-0750-VR B1 series.
B2 BQ and G2 series DO NOT WORK.

If there is a button with the Green LED this is Built in Self TEST.
BIST.

SpeedStep, what is it that makes the one you suggest work where the others don't? What specifically about them is different?
And for comparison purposes, I'm trying to keep the fix at a reasonable cost and thus looking at this one.

Thanks for your insight! Been too long since I last built my own computer.

There are 3 Models from EVGA that are All 750W. However ONLY the B1 model works. B2 and BQ units have MAX POWER on the 3.3v / 5v rails at 120W. The B1 model has 150W max on these rails.
On Dell 875W power supplies this goes up to 225W on the 3.3v / 5v Rails. Working model is
EVGA NEX SuperNOVA 750 B1 110-B1-0750-VR

The model that does not work the B2 Below
Both are rated at 750W Corsair TX650 is fine CX650 is not.

Yes, and you don't need 650 watts, either, unless you have a radical video card installed. I have a budget Cooler Master 430M in my XPS 8500, and it has worked flawlessly.

I ended up going with the EVGA Supernova that was recommended above and it solved my issues. Easy install.
patesdellcc, thanks for the recommendation but I decided against a refurbished unit, prefer going with new.

Thanks again, for everyone's input on my problem. After fiddling with it some more, the computer did show signs of life again. First with having just the power supply plugged into the motherboard. I progressively added more devices back on and for a while it seemed to run alright. It was maybe 3 weeks later that our home lost power again. Have I mentioned I hate new construction happening nearby? Pretty sure someone snapped a line in digging or something. In any case, I ran down and unplugged my computer. When the power came back on a couple hours later, I tried plugging my computer back in. Same result as the first time.
One thing I did do differently this time in testing was taking a paperclip and putting one end in the plug for the motherboard for a green wire and the other end into a black wire. Plugged the power supply in and it started right up. Which in turn this means it's actually my motherboard that's shot. I'll try other suggestions above but I think this computer is just dead.
But wanted to thank everyone again and give an update to my saga. Lousy ending but such is the life of a computer sometimes.
