Precision 690 performance issue
Hi,
I have a precision 690 and they don't provide performance level as I should expect.
I ran a cpu bound program on many computer and I got a correlation between cpu seep and time for one unit of work. But with this precision 690 I got 20% slower.
The original config of sytem was:
2 xeon 5050 dual core 3 Gig
2 X 1 Gig 533 MHz memory on riser
The memory performance index on Vista give me a score of 4.5. Support at dell told me memory at 667 MHz i will provide around 20% better transfer rate.
I buy 2 x 2Gig at 667 MHz and the score is now at 4.1.
If somebody can give me other stats about memory performance index on a Precision 690 this will be greatly appreciate. Could you provide your config (memory/CPU) with stats.
Thanks

Hi,
The problem is mainly because you are not running Quad-Channel in your memory. You need at least 4 Dimms in same configuration to enable Quad memory channel. You are now running Dual channel which will not fully utilize the Intel 5000 chipset's memory bandwidth.
Since you have already bought 2 x 2GB (667), you need to buy two more dimms. However, I shall remind you that it must be in the same configuration as your current 667Mhz dimms, ie. same size, same rank and same configuration (such as x8 or x16). Please refer to the manual on how to install memory on riser.
If you want more information about Quad-channel memory, please refer to the intel 5000 chipset.
Good Luck!
