Precision 960 Memory Upgrade

My PC had 2gigs Ram and I bought more 4gigs (2x2) from Dell to increase the amount of RAM. When i installed it in slot 3 & 4 the Bios it saw it when i booted up but it only showed 3gigs when I looked at Properties for "My Computer".  I tried changing them and putting the 1gig chip in slot 1, 2gig in slot 2, 1gig in slot 3 and 2g in slot 4. Then I got a message during bootup that said there was a memory mis-match. So i tried changing 2g slot 1 & slot 2 and 1g slot 3 & 4. Still showed 3gig in Properties for "My Computer". At that point i took out the origonal 2g chips and just put the 2X2gig chips in slot 1 & 2 and it still shows 3gigs in Properties for "My Computer".  Is there somewhere else that shows the memory amount or are there some settings that I should be changing?

Thanks,

Rivmanaz

Do you have Precision 690, as Dell does not list a model 960?

What does the system setup show for memory?

If you have a 32bit system, this does not recognize 6gb of memory, 3gb± is all a 32bit system can address.

Basically what it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it’s not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors & 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.

64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.

Bev,

Thanks for your help. I do have the Precision 690, sorry about that.

The system setup will show all four memory modules and 6gb.

So after reading all the info you pointed me to it is my understanding that my PC will only use 4gb of memory. Is that correct?

I appreciate your help.
